This joint edition of "Quicksand" and "Passing" was edited by Deborah McDowell and published by Rutgers University Press in 1986 both in cloth and paperback. McDowell’s edition is significant because it helped bring Nella Larsen’s two major works back into the public eye and prompted a renewed interest in Larsen’s fiction among educators. This edition also acknowledges an underlying theme of lesbian attraction that pervades throughout the novel, which McDowell discusses in the introduction.
