Born in 1934, Lorenzo Woods grew up in the Fort Hill Homes housing project on Lemon Street in Marietta, Georgia. Woods attended Lemon Street Elementary School and Lemon Street High School, where his father, Marion J. Woods, served as principal. After graduation Woods spent two years at Fort Valley State College before joining the United States Navy. He later moved to Sacramento, California, where he worked for the United States Post Office and the United States Army Depot. In the 1970s Woods returned to Marietta and worked for Lockheed.
