Dr. Betty Siegel officially became the second president of Kennesaw College (now Kennesaw State University) during the beginning of the fall quarter in 1981. A presidential search committee made up of nineteen individuals (students, faculty, and community members) selected Siegel from a potential pool of 147 applicants. Siegel participated in multiple interviews and evaluations, eventually culminating with two days of on-campus meetings and interviews. The Board of Regents unanimously approved Siegel as president on August 19, 1981. Siegel hosted an official meet-and-greet with students in early October.
