The Georgia Training School for Mental Defectives opened in July 1921 in Gracewood, Georgia. It was established following the passage of a bill by the Georgia General Assembly for the segregation and care of children with developmental disabilities. The facility was later renamed Gracewood State School and Hospital, and was colloquially known as Gracewood. Throughout the period of segregation, Gracewood cared for white children with developmental disabilities. The drawings in this collection date from 1954 to 1960.
