    Description
Zion Baptist Church was founded in 1866 by a group of formerly enslaved individuals. For 153 years, Zion Baptist Church has played a major role in Marietta's African American history and has served as a church home to many of Marietta's oldest Black residents. In April 1986, Dr. Thomas A. Scott of Kennesaw State University conducted a series of oral history interviews with long-time members of Zion Baptist Church. The purpose of these interviews was to assist in the preparation of a documentary about Zion's history entitled "Upon This Rock." While the main focus of the interviews is the history of Zion Baptist Church, the interviewees discuss many other topics of interest, including their experiences at the Lemon Street Grammar School and the Lemon Street High School within Marietta's segregated school system.
