Her first three books (Boomer, Railroad Voices, and Railroad Noir) and many of her short stories are about her experiences as a brakeman for two decades on railroads throughout the West. She has been actively involved in the study abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico, and is completing a book of stories growing out of her travels to Mexico and interest in Mexican and Mesoamerican culture.
