I-75 became complete with the opening of the Georgia segment of I-75. The interstate consisted of an uninterrupted stretch of road from Sault Ste Marie in Michigan's Upper Peninsula to the Tampa Bay area in Florida. Work on I-75 began at the latest in 1965, but there are several segments that started around 1957.

On December 21, 1977, the Committee for I-75 celebrated the official opening of I-75. The committee sent out a press packet to highlight talking points and answer common questions regarding I-75. The committee also commissioned a song, Ballad of I-75, which was performed at the official opening and released as a single.
