Understanding "Othello" and "The Tempest" through Illustrations

These resources were curated for a rare book assignment developed through a collaboration between the Bentley Rare Book Museum and the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies. This assignment requires students to analyze eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century illustrations depicting Othello - the protagonist in Shakespeare's "Othello." Students should use dramaturgical theory to consider how depictions of Othello evolve and therefore reveal issues of race, gender, politics, and social norms over a period of three hundred years. All works (or excerpts of works) featured in this collection are housed in the Bentley Rare Book Musem.
