Sound recording digitized from an audiocassette of a telephone interview with Victor L. Priebe by Hugh L. Gordon. Priebe discusses his work as part of the organization, Jobs Now, from its conception in 1967-1968 to its end in the mid-to-late 1980s. Jobs Now was part of the organization, Action Now, which was formed by a group of business men in Louisville, Kentucky, to address problems prevalent in urban centers, including unemployment, housing, and economic development. Jobs Now concentrated on finding jobs in private industry for those deemed hardcore unemployed. Mr. Priebe was also part of the group of business representatives who were invited to contribute to the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), which was signed into law in 1973. In addition, he talks about the creation of private industry councils (PIC) and his involvement with the National Alliance of Business (NAB).; Victor Lewis Priebe was born and grew up on a farm near Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. After graduating from high school, Priebe moved to the United States to attend college. He received a B.A. in Divinity from Augustana College , a Th.M. in Counseling and Clinical Training from Southern Baptist Seminary, an M.A. in History from the University of Louisville, and a Ph.D. in Religion from Drew University. Priebe want on to serve as a pastor in several German and Southern Baptist churches over the course of 15 years.
In 1967-1968, Dr. Priebe accepted a position with the non-profit organization, Action Now, a consortium of business leaders that was formed to address problems of urban Louisville, including employment, housing, and economic development. He was the director of the employment program, Jobs Now, working to place the hardcore unemployed in industry positions and to help them maintain their jobs through training and support. Priebe was also part of the group of business exectuives who contributed to the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and was involved in the creation of Private Industry Councils. In addition, he was involved with the National Alliance of Business in the 1970s. Action Now was disbanded in the 1980s. Priebe formed his own management consulting company, Priebe Management, in 1980. On retiring in 1988, he returned to the ministry, serving as an interim minister until the age of 81. VIctor Lewis Priebe died on October 18, 2012.
